The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has proposed Prime Minister to approve lotus as the national flower of Vietnam.
According to the Ministry, lotus is worthy to be Vietnam’s national flower because: being sourced from Vietnam or grown in Vietnam for a very long time; being adaptable to Vietnamese weather and grow everywhere in the country, blossoming year round or for a long time in the year; showing the culture and traditional, will, manner and aspiration of Vietnamese, and being beautiful and fragrant.
The proposal also included a set of regulations on using the national flower as well as activities to promote it both nationally and internationally.
The ministry, which made the proposal as ordered by the Prime Minister, said it studied the national flowers of many countries and consulted many culturists, officials and scientists before presenting the official proposal.
Last year, the Ministry organized national flower polls throughout the country. Many species of flowers have been suggested, such as peach, areca, yellow apricot, rose, bamboo, etc. However, most of people support lotus.
If the Prime Minister approves the proposal, the Ministry will organize the national flower announcement and the first national flower festival in Hanoi.
